The local transport sector lost one of its greats this week when former director of integrated transport at Merseytravel, Alan Stilwell, died peacefully in his sleep at the weekend.
Mr Stillwell was a winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Transport in the National Transport Awards and had taken up a roles in Merseyside and Cheshire County Councils, as well as Sefton, Liverpool and Knowsley. He was also a previous Vice-President of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Said David Brown, chief executive of Merseytravel: 'Alan was a well-liked and much respected colleague both in Merseyside and within the wider transport and Local Government community. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
'Alan retired from Merseytravel in December 2012 following eight years of service as director for Integrated Transport. He had many notable achievements during his time at Merseytravel including the development and implementation of the transport plan for Merseyside.
'He played an integral role in the delivery of Olive Mount Chord - a quarter mile stretch of rail track linking the Port of Liverpool to the West Coast Main Line improving the movement of freight within the City Region. Nationally he was acknowledged for his expertise on road safety.
'He will always be remembered as a man of integrity who was passionate about Merseyside and its development, both economically and culturally.'
