In-built video cameras will have ‘lollipop rage’ licked

Lollipop signs with in-built video cameras to record ‘lollipop rage’ incidents and car number plates will be sent out to lollipop women and men next month.

The product was developed amid concerns by councils at the rising number of incidents of lollipop rage. Dozens of lollipop staff have needed hospital treatment after being hit by cars, and others complain of regular abuse and intimidation. Part of their training now involves how to tackle confrontations.

There were an estimated 1,400 lollipop rage incidents reported to councils last year. A lollipop STOP sign has the same legal power as a red traffic light.

The new £890 lollipop signs are first going to be used by Kirklees Council. Lee Fairbrother, product manager at Routesafe, which makes the sticks, said many councils had placed orders and expected them to be used around the worst-affected areas, mainly as a deterrent.
