‘Iconic’ tram depot boost for Blackpool

Blackpool Borough Council has unveiled plans for a new £20M tram depot in the town.

The local authority’s transport chiefs revealed the scheme for the ‘iconic building’ which it believes would act as an ‘ideal base’ for the new tram service.

Cllr Maxine Callow, the council’s cabinet member for tourism and regeneration said: ‘I am delighted with the scale and design of this planning application which really does celebrate Blackpool’s association with trams. The resort has had a love affair with trams since 1885 and this new depot will enable us to move forward with an ultra-modern fleet.

‘We have incorporated the very best design and function from Europe and the building itself, while low level, will create a real “wow” factor at a major gateway into the town.’

The depot will have space to store up to 20 trams overnight.
