ITS honours for RTPI teams - and doctor’s Miles in front

Two bus real-time passenger information (RTPI) systems and one of Britain’s most respected ITS practitioners, Dr John Miles, have won honours in ITS UK’s 2008 awards for excellence in transport technology.

Judges, chaired by ITS UK president and former transport minister, Steven Norris, rated Transport for London’s iBus service for giving ‘accurate information and more effective service control, as well as providing a more reliable expandable radio system and platform for future development’.

TfL plans to have the £117M system operational by 2009. Kent Fasttrack earned praise for its ‘pioneering approach to local urban regeneration, using innovative technology to overturn completely passenger perception and experience of bus transport’.

The award for an outstanding individual contribution went to Dr Miles for more than 30 years’ devoted to ITS development and outreach.
