Hunt in on to find Portsmouth’s champion recyclers

Portsmouth City Council is on the hunt for the city’s best recycling street, which will be rewarded with a special plaque.
Council waste officers are assessing how many homes are recycling in each street, and how many are super-recyclers. As well as a special street sign, every household in the winning street will get goodies such as notepads and notebooks made from recycled materials, fridge magnets or memo boards. The awards scheme is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.
Under the scheme, two waste experts will go out with recycling collection crews and check how many homes in each street put out a recycling bin or box, the streets where all homes put out their recycling will be judged in more detail. The winning street will be announced in July.
Rose Timlett, waste development officer, said: ‘We’re out on the streets looking for the unsung heroes and giving everyone a chance to win. Last time we did a big check, two years ago, three quarters of all houses in the city were recycling. So, the competition for this award is going to be tough.’
