Hunslet viaduct work means end is in sight for Leeds ring road

The erection of massive steel beams needed to construct the Hunslet Viaduct has begun, bringing the Leeds inner ring road nearer to completion.
The 120-feet long steel beams are being lifted into position by large cranes on to the concrete piers. The beams are made from a special type of steel which will never have to be painted – the first time such a form of construction has been used in an urban environment.
Andrew Carter, leader of Leeds City Council, said: ‘Never needing to paint the beams will mean fewer traffic disruptions, as well as freeing up public money and reducing the costs of the environment. The 500-metre viaduct spans Hunslet Road from the west of the River Aire to the Hunslet Distributor Road. The construction of the viaduct marks the final stage of the Leeds inner ring road, which is due for completion in 2008. Carter added: ‘The viaduct is a very important piece of inner-road jigsaw which, once completed will foster free flowing traffic across the city and ease congestion in the centre and surrounding areas.’
