How to spend a penny without the need for cash

Cashless payment for public toilets would be a highly-feasible add-on to citizen and public transport smartcards, last week’s Road Network Management Conference heard.

Following a question from Lewisham transport head, Darien Goodwin, Simon Goodale, of equipment supplier Payzone, said he envisaged no major technical issues in fitting wireless readers.

He saw Barclays/Oyster-style tie-ups looking favourably on new small-purchase opportunities. The catalyst for local authorities could be refurbishments, using revenues from charges now permitted by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Mike Bone, of the British Toilet Association, told Surveyor his officials were already discussing new payment methods with ‘forward-looking’ councils. He said: ‘Smartcards could discount access for residents or the disabled, and for public transport cardholders at stations’.
