Hoon puts his back into ‘spine’ launch

Transport secretary, Geoff Hoon, kicked-off work to upgrade a key stretch of the A1 in North Yorkshire last week.

The Highways Agency said the scheme would ‘provide the missing link of motorway between London and Newcastle’.

The minister dug the first turf at a ceremony in Leeming, to mark the start of the £318M, 13-mile section from South Dishforth.
When the work is complete, a three-lane motorway will run along the 24-mile stretch of the A1 between Dishforth and Barton.

Mr Hoon said: ‘The A1 is of both regional and national importance forming a major transport “spine” through the north of England, carrying goods and people and supporting investment.’
