Honours recognise bosses of technical services

The hard work and effort of those in local authority technical services has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours.

In Dundee, Mike Galloway has been made an OBE for his work on urban design and regeneration. Galloway has been involved a number of important Dundee projects, including renewal of the city centre and the seafront.

‘The work I do is down to the time and effort of a team and is due to the quality of people I work with,’ he said.

Retiring director general of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Roy Wicks, was also made an OBE, for services to public transport. Wicks, who has been at SYPTE for 10 years and in the public sector for more than 40, said: ‘I am proud of the last 10 years and what we have done at SYPTE because it has made a difference. That can be seen in physical signs such as the new station in Sheffield and interchanges in Barnsley and Doncaster and in the services we offer to our passengers.’

Emergency planning officer Annette Senior was made an MBE for her work in the aftermath of the flooding in Rotherham last summer. During the floods, she set up a local humanitarian centre, but said she would accept the honour on ‘behalf of the whole of Rotherham Borough Council’s emergency planning team and everyone else who worked above and beyond the call of duty.’ Westminster street sweeper,

Ted Wilson, 65, was a familiar sight around London’s Trafalgar Square and the West End for 33 years before retiring in the summer. He was made an MBE for his service to local government.

Other technical service workers recognised include: Rodney Brown, emergency services liaison team leader, Highways Agency, Department for Transport: OBE. John Howison, most recently director, trunk road infrastructure and professional services, Transport Scotland, Scottish Executive: OBE Francis Clegg, acting general manager, Translink Bus Services.
