Historic character falls victim to modern curse

A £1M regeneration scheme designed to enhance the historic character of a Durham market town has been compromised by the impact of heavy traffic.

Durham County Council is to replace cobbles used to pave part of the road surface in Barnard Castle, as part of the Gateway scheme.

The stone cobbles had not bedded in successfully and continued to become loose, detracting from the original design, the council said.

Head of environment and planning, Rod Lugg, said: ‘Under less-busy conditions, I’m sure the cobbles would be fine, but the volume of heavy traffic passing over them had a greater impact than we thought it would, and we now, reluctantly, consider that Tarmac is the only reasonable way forward.’

The Gateway cobbles in Galgate will be lifted later this month at a cost of £20,000, although narrow strips will be left to frame the Tarmac which will replace them.
