Highways funds diverted to cover winter costs

Derby City Council may have to divert £100,000 of the £250,000 extra it put aside for pothole repairs to meet the increased cost of winter maintenance in the recent cold snap.

It had diverted £250,000 from its footway budget to tackle a reported £1.5M backlog – 4,000 holes – in its roads. Cabinet member for planning and transportation Lucy Care has said that the overspend on winter maintenance would mean less of the highway allocation, which had been purposely underspent, would be available to tackle the backlog.
