Highways: Wayward parents left red faced as Derby spreads the risk

Derby City Council has started using red textureflex outside schools to discourage parents from parking near gates. Around 30m of highway has been painted red – at a cost of £10 to £11 per-square-metre – in order to ban parking at times agreed with each school on the red section of carriageway. Jon Pumfrey, accident prevention officer at Derby, said that despite the fact the restrictions were advisory, ‘on the whole’, people did not park on the red, but they frequently flouted the zig-zag markings. ‘The surface makes it obvious when a driver is in the wrong, putting pressure on them not to park near to school gates, which is safer for everyone.’ But it was not suitable for every school, since nearby residents were not always keen on their roads being painted red, he added.
