Highways: Nature will dictate works

A Hampshire road closed by a landslip in March should reopen this winter, the council has told disgruntled locals.
Heavy rainfall triggered the slip between two villages north-west of Petersfield, after unusually dry winter weather saw the ground shrink and crack. A 20m section of the C18 lost one-third of its width at Stoner Hill. As the area boasts four designations, including a site of special scientific interest, protected species must be surveyed before a detailed works programme is agreed with English Nature.
Reconstruction will start next month, taking 10-12 weeks.
