Highways: Engineers urged to develop strategy for maintaining footways

Highways design engineers and drainage engineers have been urged to have a greater dialogue, as part of a new best practice guide on the durability of asphalt footways. The Road note 42, produced by TRL, which contains guidelines on procedures thought necessary for maximising durability, says that preventing water ingress was among the most important factors. It was vital, the advice says, given predictions of more intense rainfall, to develop a strategy for drainage maintenance at the design stage, to reduce the risk of excess water reducing durability. : www.trl.co.uk/store/report_list.asp?pid=220
