Highways: Crime grates in Newham

 
Newham Council has pledged firm action against thieves who have stolen 14 iron gully grates and one manhole cover, leaving gaping holes in the streets.
The criminals had also taken eight water valve covers belonging to Thames Water, according to the council.
The cost to replace the grates temporarily and then permanently is said to be about £250 each.
