Highlight ‘vital’ services, urges LGA

Local authorities must do more to enhance public awareness of ‘important services’ such as street cleaning and recycling in order to boost satisfaction with their overall service, according to the Local Government Association.
A new survey reveals that residents are increasingly happy with the cleanliness standard, recycling and waste-disposal services in their area, but satisfaction with their overall council service has slightly declined. The Best value user satisfaction survey 2006-07 revealed that 51% of people were satisfied with the overall service provided by their local authority – a decline of 2% since 2003-04.
However, the number of people satisfied with their area’s cleanliness standard had risen 9% to 64%, while satisfaction rates for waste recycling and disposal both increased around 5% to 66% and 79% respectively. Furthermore, 60% were satisfied with local bus services – up 6% on the previous survey’s figures. The Local Government Association blames the contradictory results on a lack of public awareness of many council services, such as street cleaning and recycling.
LGA chairman,
Lord Bruce-Lockhart, said: ‘Councils must do more to link themselves to the services they provide. Why is it that satisfaction with services is rising and yet overall satisfaction is falling? ‘More needs to be done to enhance public awareness. While unpopular services such as council tax demands and parking tickets are clearly branded, important services such as street cleaning and recycling in some areas carry no mention of the local authority.’ The best value survey also revealed a 2% increase (72%) in satisfaction for parks and open spaces since 2003-04.
