High street makes a return in Brixton

The final phase of the Brixton Town Centre improvement scheme, which will see the removal of a gyratory system, is set to begin, after Transport for London awarded the contract to FM Conway.

The road layout will change so it is more like a traditional high street, with the removal of a gyratory system around St Matthews Church and the widening of Brixton Hill to accommodate two-way traffic. There will also be a new central square combining Windrush Square and Tate Gardens. Lambeth Council is currently working with interested local people to decide on a name for this public space.

The first two phases of the project improved the environment for pedestrians and provided better bus accessibility.

Work on the third and final phase is scheduled to begin this month.
