High cost of ‘bling’ proves dead expensive

A protest camp on a Saxon king’s gravesite is jeopardising a road improvement in Southend, Essex.
Southend council’s former leader, Anna Waite, who lost her seat in the local elections two weeks ago, claimed it would cost £500,000 in legal fees to move the protesters. She said there would be ‘no point’ in spending the money without a commitment from the DfT to cover the cost overruns to the A127/A1159 road expansion.
The scheme was estimated to cost £3.5M when first proposed, but Southend now puts the projected cost at £20.5M.
The environmental protestors have set up ‘camp bling’ – named after the king – consisting of tree houses, tents and tunnels.
