High Court decides fines won’t stick unless tickets hit windscreens

A landmark legal case could set the path for motorists escaping payment of their parking fines by driving away before the ticket hits their windscreen.
The High Court this week ruled that Newham councillor and businessman, Simon Ademolake, did not have to pay his parking fine because the warden had not placed the ticket on his car.
Ademolake received a £50 fine by mail in 2005 after he stopped his car on a red route in London’s Whitechapel. He took his case to the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service, which ruled in his favour.
Transport for London took the matter to the High Court, where Justice Calvert-Smith found the warden’s actions did not amount to an ‘attempt’ to issue a parking ticket, as defined in the London Local Authorities Act 2000.
