Hi-tech system speeds up disabled allocation

The time taken to allocate a disabled person a parking bay outside their home has been slashed, thanks to new technology put into use by Dundee City Council.

Disabled drivers now only need to make one phone call and a decision can be made, often within 24 hours. The authority introduced the scheme, which uses geographic information systems, aerial photography and Ordnance Survey mapping, to remove the need for a time- consuming site visit.

Applicants still have to produce the V11 document for the car they normally use, but when a decision has been made by council staff using the new system, painters can be dispatched to put down the necessary white lines to mark the bay out. The scheme has been shortlisted for the e-Government National Awards 2007.
