WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has announced a series of trials exploring new applications for quality compost.
The trials demonstrate the financial, practical and environmental case for using quality compost in applications ranging from green roofs and rain gardens, to the growing of biofuel crops on regenerated brownfield land. The common theme of the trials will be to explore the technical and commercial potential of using quality compost in new and innovative applications.
Starting in 2009, the trials and studies will take place at sites across the UK using green compost and food-included compost produced to the BSI Pas 100 specification. Green roofs are an established component of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).
Paul Mathers, landscape and regeneration programme manager at WRAP, said: ‘We’ve already proved that quality compost is a practical material that can bring a host of benefits. This new set of trials builds on this work and will help us gain a better understanding of just how versatile this product can be.’
