Richard Hayes has been reappointed chief executive of the Institute of Highway Engineers, with a two-and-a-half year extension to his current contract.
Mr Hayes has overseen major progress at the Institute across membership, training and guidance. Perhaps most notably, under his tenure the IHE was invited by the UK Roads Liaison Group to review and update the current national guidance on risk and liability producing the well-received document ‘Well managed highways liability risk’.

The IHE winter services competency and training has also become the industry standard and is included in the new national highways code of practice.
A past president of the IHE, Mr Hayes has more than three decades' experience in the highways sector with a background working local highways authorities as well as consultancy. He is a major proponent of boosting the skills agenda in the sector and supporting the intelligent client function in the public sector.
Mr Hayes said: ‘I am delighted to continue to develop the IHE into a body which represents the interest of highway practitioners across the UK and which is striving to provide new opportunities for continuous professional development.’
