Having zero ambition will pay dividends for Scottish recyclers

Ambitious plans to deliver a zero waste society in Scotland have gone out to consultation.

Under the proposals, the Scottish Government aims to achieve a 70% recycling rate by 2025, compared with the current rate of about 34% of municipal waste being recycled or composted. It also aims to landfill no more than 5% of waste by 2025.

Holyrood insists it has no plans to charge for the collection of household waste, but it is considering a greater role for incentives to encourage recycling. Measures include extending kerbside collections, more facilities to treat green and food waste locally, and increased emphasis on sustainable procurement.

Other targets include limiting the proportion of municipal waste going to energy-from-waste facilities to 25%. The Scottish Government is considering further landfill bans on materials, including glass, metals, textiles and wood. : www.scotland.gov.uk/zerowasteplan
