Hastings glows with pride as pedestrian safety takes pole position

Two zebra crossings in Hastings have been upgraded with beacon poles which glow from the inside.
It is the first time that these illuminated poles have been used in the East Sussex, and the county is inviting residents to comment on their effectiveness by e-mailing highway lighting engineer, Simon Hall.
The improvements in Sedlescombe Road North and Bohemia Road, Hastings, were made after an accident involving an elderly pedestrian at one of the crossings, and are designed to make the crossings more visible to drivers, particularly at night, when lights from nearby shops and offices can be distracting.
Cllr Matthew Lock, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: ‘Not only are the glowing poles an attractive addition to these roads, they mean the crossings are visible to drivers from much further away. This gives them more warning and makes it safer for people to cross.’ simon.hall@eastsussex.gov.uk /01273 482781
