Harsh words for bus deregulation marking its 20th anniversary

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority is urging passengers to back its call to the Government for better local bus services.
On its 20th anniversary, GMPTA has condemned bus deregulation for its failure to deliver real improvements for bus passengers, and has welcomed transport secretary Douglas Alexander’s recent commitment to give local authorities more control to improve services.
Councillor Roger Jones, chair of the authority, said: ‘I urge people to contact their MPs and make their voices heard, so we can demonstrate the full scale of feeling on this issue.’
According to GMPTA, over the 20-year period since 1986, bus journeys in Greater Manchester have fallen by 38%, and bus fares have risen by 42% above inflation. In addition, bus operators have continued to withdraw services on low-profit routes, leaving local communities isolated.
