Harrow puts a coat on to tackle gum

Harrow LBC is cleaning its footways and applying a protective coating in order to prevent chewing gum and oil stains.

The council aims to deliver cleaner streets and has started by ‘cleaning and sealing’ 1,000 square metres of Wealdstone High Street. Harrow’s environment team previously used the technique to seal areas of car parks from oil stains, but has now extended it to footways.

Cllr Susan Hall, Harrow’s cabinet member for environment, said: ‘This sealant is a massive help in combating what everyone agrees is an urban blight.’
