Hampshire stumbles on a solution to deter forest trippers

Hampshire County Council is spending £630,000 on revamping its pavements and streetscene in New Milton, after paying out £56,000 to 13 people who tripped on footpaths in the New Forest area.
While only some of the claims came from people falling on pavements in New Milton’s town centre, the council hoped to reduce the number of incidents occurring there by improving the condition of the pavements and refurbishing street furniture, said Kevin Fuller, the council’s area director for highways and transportation west.
‘Across the community, the condition of the footways are of a similar order to other areas in the county, but the area has a high population of older residents, which is quite a factor.’
