Hackney’s new bin fleet order is a breath of fresh air

Hackney Council has launched a new fleet of ‘quiet, clean and green’ bin lorries.

The new engines, which run on biodiesel, are compliant with legislation, due in 2009, which will put stricter controls on vehicle emissions. The council claims it is the first London borough to abide by the new rules.
‘Our bin trucks are among the cleanest in the country and show our commitment to making the borough cleaner and greener,’ said Councillor Alan Laing, cabinet member for neighbourhoods. ‘Until this launch, the refuse team used hire vehicles to collect waste.’
The truck engines use selective catalytic reduction technology to effectively ‘clean’ exhaust gases.
