Gum campaign gives Oxford something to chew over

A one-month campaign in Oxford has resulted in a 63% drop in chewing gum litter.

Twelve locations in the city centre were monitored in the month before the campaign began, and again, during its progress. In the month beforehand, 323 pieces of chewing gum were dropped in the sampling areas, decreasing to 120 pieces during the campaign.

The clean-up drive was launched after the council received paid-for advertising following a successful application to the Chewing Gum Action Group.

Posters were displayed across the city, an Inspector Morse-themed street theatre performance took place on four consecutive weeks, and an information stall was set up to educate people about the problem.

Cllr Jean Fooks, executive member for a cleaner city, said: ‘It looks like this message has really made an impact but we realise we need to sustain the momentum and change people’s behaviour for good.’
