New draft planning guidance urging all London boroughs to have open space strategies has been published by mayor Boris Johnson.
The guidance, produced jointly with CABE Open Space, includes advice on assessing the quantity and quality of open space, and identifying the needs of open space users, including wildlife. ‘In the face of new environmental, social and economic challenges, preserving our open spaces has never been more important for a good quality of life and a more sustainable future,’ said Johnson.
CABE Space’s work is intended to apply across England, although the draft guidance does contain elements which apply to London and reflect the London Plan. Open Space Strategies is an updated amalgamation of two separate guides that were produced by CABE Space and the GLA in 2004.
