Greta Thunberg joins Hampshire airport protest

Residents, councillors and Extinction Rebellion activists were joined by climate campaigner Greta Thunberg to protest the expansion of a private jet facility at the weekend.

Hundreds of people marched to Farnborough Airport on Saturday, protesting its plans to increase flights from 50,000 to 70,000 a year, double weekend flights, and boost the use of heavier, more polluting, private jets.

The planning application, due to be considered by Rushmoor Borough Council in March, has received more than 2,700 comments.

Activists also called for a total ban of private jets.

Ms Thunberg said: ‘It is clear that private jets are incompatible with ensuring present and future living conditions on this planet. So we’re not going to let this continue.

‘We’re not going to let the rich, who are responsible for the majority of aviation emissions, get away with sacrificing people and the planet in order to maintain their extreme lifestyles.’
