‘Green money’ offered to S Yorks residents

Residents in South Yorkshire are to be rewarded with ‘green money’ for abandoning their cars in favour of sustainable transport options.

Under a scheme launched by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, anyone making a journey using sustainable travel from 10-22 September will earn Carbon Quids, which can be exchanged for prizes such as gym membership, free travel, trees and a bike.

The currency is being introduced as part of European Mobility Week (16-22 September) and aims to encourage people to use public transport, walk, cycle or car pool.

Roy Wicks, director general at SYPTE, said: ‘Introducing a green currency is an innovative concept and I am delighted that South Yorkshire is leading the way. ‘Our aim is to encourage more people to think about how they travel and how their behaviour affects the environment.’
