Government launches crackdown on Blue Badge abuse

Proposed changes to the Blue Badge disabled parking scheme have gone out to consultation, in a bid to ‘stamp out abuse of the scheme’.
The main changes include: extending the scheme to children under two who are dependent on bulky medical equipment; extending the scheme to people with severe congenital disabilities in both arms, who are able to drive a vehicle without adaptations to the steering wheel; introducing a hologram on the badge as a security measure; and allowing for badges to be issued for less than three years, so those with short-term disabilities do not enjoy Blue Badge concessions after their recovery.
Announcing the consultation, transport minister, Gillian Merron, said: ‘The changes we are proposing will help ensure that Blue Badges continue to meet the needs of disabled people.
‘We want the people who need a badge to get one, and stamp out abuse of the scheme.’
The consultation closes on 19 June.
