Gosport builds on 'excellent' record

Hampshire County Council is to spend £4M on addressing ‘urgent problems’ on the A32 into Gosport, on the back of extra funding it received for its ‘excellent’ rated second local transport plan.
Announced this week, the council’s five-year building and maintenance programme will see £4M spent on improving the A32 between Fareham and Gosport, and £850,000 spent on developing bus priority at Botley Road.
In addition, the council said it would progress feasibility work on an alternative to the South Hampshire Rapid Transit Scheme, which was formally abandoned in November and ‘would have taken three million car journeys off the road each year (Surveyor, 30 November)’. It will also work on developing the Chickenhall Lane link road and Botley bypass.
Cllr Ken Thornber, leader of Hampshire County Council, said: ‘Our environment department is seeking to speed up the release of developer contributions in order to fund infrastructure improvements, and has taken advantage of extra funding for safety and reward grant that we have received because of our “excellent” rated second LTP.
‘The LTP includes significant investment in maintaining our roads and our successful road safety programme, investment in quality bus partnerships and community transport, and in a second park-and-ride site for Winchester.’
Dennis Wright, chairman of Gosport council’s community and environment board, said the A32 improvement plans did not fully address the problems, ‘but nothing really will, as Gosport’s a peninsula’. He said a guided bus system would be a feasible and ‘much cheaper’ alternative to the rapid-transit system.
