Gordon Brown catches on to buses

The prime minister’s reference to buses in his conference speech shows the Government is ‘serious about bus reform’, according to the passenger transport executive group.

In his speech at the Labour conference in Bournemouth, Gordon Brown said: ‘I have no doubt that the best answer to disengagement from our democracy is to renew our democracy.

‘And that means change… change to strengthen local democracy, with new powers for economic development and bus services.’

Jonathan Bray, pteg’s assistant director, said it was rare for buses to feature in a prime minister’s conference speech, ‘so this is welcome’.

The prime minister also pledged to build 10 rather than five new eco-towns.
