Glasgow car club fans keen to keep up with rival city trends

Edinburgh Car Club has enjoyed growth of 60% over the past year, and is now eyeing an expansion into neighbouring Glasgow.

A conference to celebrate the club’s 10th anniversary last week heard how it now had 2,500 members and aimed to get its 100th car on the road this year.

Keith Stark, manager of the Edinburgh club, said plans for the Glasgow expansion had been in the pipeline for the past two years. ‘We have had more hits on our website asking for a car in Glasgow than we have had for any other city in the UK,’ he said. ‘The pressure is coming from Glasgow people who are asking for this service.’

Stark added that Glasgow council seemed divided in its support for the project, and that funding was needed to get it up and running.

The organisation has applied to the Scottish Executive for funding, and transport minister, Stewart Stevenson, spoke positively about car clubs at the event.

Meanwhile, Transport for London has announced £1M investment to support the growth of car clubs across the capital over the course of the next two years. Mayor Boris Johnson said this would bring around one-third of Londoners to within five minutes of their nearest car club vehicle (Surveyor, 12 March).
