The public inquiry into the £431M Mersey Gateway Project got under way this week.
The Mersey Gateway will provide a new bridge over the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes. The project includes modifications to the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge to improve facilities for public transport, walking and cycling.
The new Mersey Gateway Bridge, which would be polled, would cross the river around 1.5km to the east of the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Halton Borough Council approved the project last year, when the costs were revised upwards from £390M to £431M mainly due to additional works along access routes.
