Fury at delay on relief roads

A north west council has reacted with “total fury” over Whitehall’s failure to give the green light to a £433M road scheme.
The 25km road scheme, at the heart of a South East Manchester transportation strategy, is based on a north-south A6 by-pass for Stockport, and Poynton in Cheshire, plus a Manchester Airport link road.
Leader of Stockport Council, Greater Manchester, Cllr Dave Goddard said: “To say we are amazed and angry would be an understatement. I am sick and tired of Stockport being messed around by the Department for Transport and I know that tens of thousands of people and businesses across the region, and our neighbouring councils, will share my deep disappointment.”
The scheme was designed to ease congestion, improving traffic flows onto the national road network, and helping public transport journey times.
Goddard added: “Gillian Merron, a transport minister, wants yet another delay – possibly putting parts of this vital scheme back for another 10 years. Stockport has been waiting for a by-pass, literally for generations, and still we are waiting.
The Transport Minister, in her letter to local MPs, said: “Whilst we recognise that the scheme would deliver significant benefits in relieving congestion in the south east Manchester area and improving access to Manchester Airport, the key issue that we have been seeking to address is the affordability of the scheme within available budgets.”
It says she recognised that the further delay in reaching a decision on funding will be a “disappointment” to supporters of the scheme, and added: “I have asked Department for Transport officials to then take stock on options later in 2007 following the completion of the current Comprehensive Spending Review.”
