Funding boost after Aberdeen blows budget

Aberdeen councillors have agreed to increase the city’s snow clearing budget by more than 18% after some of the worst winter weather for 50 years.
The city council has raised its base budget for winter maintenance this year from £1.6M to £1.9M after actual spending on the service soared last winter to £2.3M, more than £351,000 up on the previous year. But it acknowledges that additional funding may still be needed to cope with another severe winter, particularly as the budget has to cover other emergencies such as flooding and major subsidence.
Aberdeen had its worst March weather for half a century, with 17 days of snow triggering widespread transport disruption. Nearly 3,000 tonnes of extra salt will be kept in readiness at its depots and minimum stock levels have also been raised.
