Free for all on Eastbourne’s streets as council awaits ruling

Meter charging on Eastbourne town centre streets has been put on hold while East Sussex County Council awaits government approval to take control of parking.

Under the new experimental traffic order, there will be no charging on-street – other than in isolated areas - but in most streets parking will be limited to two hours, except for permit-holders who will be able to park all day.

Car parks will not be affected and charges will continue to apply. The order will allow the county council to take enforcement action against illegal parking, including overstaying, parking in resident and business bays without the correct permit, and parking on yellow lines.

Under the decriminalised system, the county council promises to help pay for transport infrastructure projects in the town with any surplus revenue from penalty charge notices.
