Free bikes for kids offer to promote city’s cycle network

Liverpool City Council is considering offering free bicycles to children to cycle to school, partly to raise the profile of the city’s cycle network.
The proposals under consideration would only apply to certain children, such as those who live more than three miles from their school, a council spokesman told Surveyor. However, the offer of a free bike would not replace a bus pass, which would be needed if conditions were not suitable for cycling.
The spokesman said the scheme would be cost-neutral, especially given the new school bike parks and shelters which would be needed to house the extra bikes. He added that such as scheme would raise the profile of the city’s extensive cycle paths, which are currently under-utilised.
