Four options on offer to ease Menai Straights congestion

A new £150M bridge across the Menai Straight is one of the suggestions to reduce congestion at the current crossing.

Two of four options offered up by engineers include building a new bridge – either a multi span concrete box crossing or a long span cable stayed bridge. The other options up for consultation are to do nothing or widen the existing bridge. Both of the new bridge options suggest building to the east of the existing bridge, to carry two lanes of traffic from Anglesey on to the Welsh mainland.

Britannia Bridge – the current structure – would carry two lanes of traffic in the opposite direction. Provision for cyclists and pedestrians would be made through segregated facilities, tying into the local road network on either side of the bridge. The Transport Wales consultation finishes in February next year, when a decision will be taken on whether a scheme should be included in the Trunk Road programme.
