Forth crossing work takes big step forward

Construction of the Upper Forth Crossing has taken a major step forward with the third launch of the bridge deck this week.
The third launch marks visible progress on the £120M scheme at Kincardine, taking the deck out over the river for the first time. Each launch moves the deck out by 45 metres and takes two weeks. The first launch of the bridge deck started 90 metres inland from the river bank on 22 January.
Graham Porteous, Transport Scotland’s project co-ordinator, said: ‘People will now start to see the deck coming out across the Forth and we expect it to land on the other side in May next year.
‘We are pleased work is progressing on time and look forward to the long term benefits this project will bring in improving connections between the Forth Valley and Central Scotland by providing another Forth crossing.’
The project is aimed at improving east coast connections, easing congestion in Kincardine and improving access to Alloa. The bridge deck will be 1.2km long, weigh 35,000t and will sit on 25 piers, each of which are filled with 840 tonnes of concrete.
