Forth crossing cable repairs threaten to strangle Scots’ economy

Replacing or augmenting the Forth Road Bridge’s main cables would cost up to £122M, according to new figures from the Forth Estuary Transport Authority.

Figures reveal the job would take between seven and nine years to complete, and cost the economy an estimated £2.3bn, due to ‘significant’ disruption to traffic during the maintenance period.

Cllr Tony Martin, FETA convener, said the figures ‘reinforce what we already thought – that embarking on the work without an alternative in place ‘is to be avoided at all cost’.

He continued: ‘They also demonstrate the huge value of the Forth Road Bridge to Scotland’s economy.’

The study concluded that major maintenance works on the bridge over a sustained period, involving lane and carriageway closures, would potentially result in economic output falling by around £1bn, and the loss of around 3,200 jobs.
