Food shoppers eat up kms

UK urban food kilometres increased by 7% in 2006, driven by a 9% increase in car shopping, according to latest food transport indicators.

The statistics show three out of the four indicators increased in 2006, but HGV food kilometres declined by 3%. Of the other two indicators, air food kilometres rose by 31%, and carbon dioxide emissions by 31%.

The decline in HGV food kilometres was attributed to the 7% drop in estimated overseas HGV, with the UK element remaining unchanged in 2006, following a 2% decline in 2005.
