The food industry is to assess the feasibility of reducing domestic food transport by 20%, to help cut its carbon emissions.
Retailers agreed to assist the Government’s food industry-sustainability strategy, which calls on them to improve efficiency of vehicle operations and make more shelf space available for locally-sourced produce. The food industry was responsible for 33bn vehicle kilometres in 2002. But one-fifth of lorries ran empty.
