Food-disposal initiative prepared for residents

Wiltshire County Council is pioneering an initiative which encourages residents to dispose of their food waste in an ‘environmentally-friendly’ way.
The council is trialling a limited number of food ‘waste digester’ bins with households in the county, working in conjunction with Green Cone.
Two types of digesters will be offered to residents, both dealing with raw waste from food preparation and cooked waste, including bones.
Currently, the council has to pay to collect, transfer and bury all cooked kitchen waste in the landfill. It expects that up to 30% of the average household bin could be tackled at home with the Green Cone bins.
‘With EU rules requiring all councils to limit the amount of biodegradable waste they send to landfill or face fines, it is important to tackle this element of the rubbish bin,’ the council’s cabinet member for planning and waste, Toby Sturgis, said.
