Flood objectors drift away

The public inquiry into the proposed £83m Elgin flood-alleviation scheme has closed ahead of schedule, after two of the objectors withdrew.

But the objections made by the Pitgaveny and Duffus estates will still stand, and the Scottish Government’s Directorate for Planning and Environmental Appeals will consider their written submissions.

Holyrood reporter, Michael Cunliffe, who is conducting the inquiry, rejected a call for the hearing to be delayed to enable the estates to obtain further information, and Moray Council and river engineering consultant, Royal Haskoning, gave evidence as planned. A council spokesman said a decision was not expected for several months.
