Flood-hit city welcomes £6.3M aid for repair bill

Sheffield City Council has welcomed government funding of £6.3M for repairs to local roads and bridges damaged by the summer floods.

Cllr Jan Wilson, leader of the council, said the funding represented about half of the initial cost estimate. ‘This is the first stage in a longer process, and further funding will be released on receipt of satisfactory claim,’ he said. ‘We can use the money to fund flood recovery works.’

Local transport minister, Rosie Winterton, announced the funding last week, while opening the final phase of the new inner-relief road, which was delayed by the floods. ‘This flood repair money should allow work to continue on the damaged roads and I want to assure people that we are continuing to work with the council to identify further costs,’ she said.

The Department for Transport said the money would allow Sheffield to repair two key routes into the north of the city, and further funds could be available, depending on further claims from the council.
