Northumberland County Council has closed Alnwick’s Lion Bridge after an inspection revealed recent severe flooding had washed out foundations under its central support.
The historic bridge carries the B6341 – the former A1 – and is regarded as an iconic symbol of the town. ‘We are concerned about the stability of the bridge following the inspection,’ said head of highways policy, Dick Fraser. ‘The safety of motorists using the bridge is of paramount importance, and that is why we have decided to put a closure in place.
‘At this stage, the bridge is still open to pedestrians, but this may change, once further investigations have been completed.’ He said the council was working hard to find a way to tackle the stability problem.
